Everyday Grammar: First Conditional

Описание: Jill: John, are you going to the office barbecue tomorrow? I’m so excited – it’s the first one of the summer.
John: I’m not sure. My bike has a bad wheel. I’m trying to get it fixed, but the repair shop is busy.
Jill: Oh, that’s no problem. If you can’t ride your bike to the barbecue, I’ll give you a ride in my car.
John: Perfect – and you just gave me an idea about how we can explain the first conditional.
Jill: Do you mean the present and future real conditional?
John: Right. Conditional sentences present a condition and a result. In other words, when A happens, B happens.
Jill: And you often hear “if” before the condition and “will” before the result. I said “IF” your bike is broken, I WILL give you a ride.”
John: Or you can turn it around: You can give me a ride if my bike is broken tomorrow.
Jill: What are you bringing? Caty said we should all bring a dish.
John: If I have time, I’ll make some cookies. How about you?
Jill: Ooh, there’s another first conditional! And here’s another one: If I buy cherries today, I will make a pie!
John: That sounds delicious! So I’ll call you tomorrow if I need a ride.
