How to train on trail ⤵️
Summer backpacking season is here and now is the time to train for your trips!
As an alpine climbing instructor, this is how I train students and what I do myself to get in shape for alpine climbing, but it works just as well for backpacking trips.
Here’s how to train on the trail:
🥾 Find a trail near you that is close to 8 miles round trip with between 3,000 and 4,000 feet of elevation gain.
⏱️ Time yourself on your first hike without weight to get your base time to the top/turn around point of your hike.
🏋️♀️ Start adding weight to your pack, and keep timing yourself. Work your way up to 20% off your body weight.💧I like to use water as weight in Nalgene bottles and my bladder so I can dump it at the top if needed to save my knees on the way down.
⌚️ Keep timing yourself each time you hike so you can see how you progress. The benchmark we use for alpine climbing students is making it to the top of Mt. Si (in North Bend, WA) in under 2 hours with 20lbs or 20% body weight, whichever is higher. That trail is just under 4 miles to the top and about 3,000 feet of gain.
🍫 When training, keep snacks in your hip belt and water accessible so you don’t have to stop on your way up.
🗓️ Hike a training hike once a week leading up to your big trip, and then continue hiking throughout the summer so you keep your base level of fitness up.
💪🏻 Cross train with strength training and cardio if you have the time.
Before long, you’ll be ready for summer and you will feel so good on all your trips! Training really does pay off.
