On 18 February 1983, one of independent India’s worst communal massacres unfolded in Nellie, a small cluster of villages in Assam’s Nagaon district. In just six hours, over 1,800 people (mostly Bengali-origin Muslims) were brutally killed amid the Assam Agitation, which was raging over the issue of illegal immigration and citizenship.
