In the mid-1970s, the electric guitar world was dominated by familiar designs from Fender and Gibson. Wooden neck construction had been the standard for decades, but it came with persistent issues—warping, instability, and inconsistencies between instruments. Around this time, machinist and designer Travis Bean introduced a bold alternative: a neck milled from solid aluminum.

The concept worked. Aluminum necks were incredibly stable, offered remarkable sustain, and represented one of the most technically ambitious guitar designs ever attempted. But they were also heavy, expensive to manufacture, and unfamiliar to many players.

This is where the story of Kramer Guitars begins.

In this episode we examine the founding era of Kramer, when Gary Kramer, Dennis Berardi, Henry Vaccaro, Phil Petillo, and others attempted to refine and commercialize the aluminum neck concept. By combining aluminum with wooden inserts and phenolic fingerboards, they created instruments that retained the stability of metal while addressing some of the drawbacks of earlier designs.
