WHAT IS THIS KAVID KANWAR YATRA ABOUT FULL DETAILS:
🔱 What is Kanwar Yatra (कांवड़ यात्रा)?
The Kanwar Yatra is a religious pilgrimage where devotees of Lord Shiva (called Kanwariyas) walk barefoot or travel long distances to fetch sacred water from the Ganga River (or other holy rivers) and offer it to Shiva temples, especially to the Shiva Linga at Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi), Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri, or Deoghar (Baidyanath Dham).
---
🙏 Significance of Kanwar Yatra
It is observed in the holy month of Shravan, which is considered the most auspicious month to worship Lord Shiva.
Devotees carry "Kanwars" — decorated structures holding pots filled with Ganga Jal (holy water).
The water is offered to the Shiva Linga on Shravan Shivratri or on other Mondays in Shravan (called Sawan Somwar).
Many devotees take vows for wishes, and this pilgrimage is seen as penance and devotion.
🧳 What is a Kānwar or Kavad?
A Kanwar/Kavad is a bamboo pole balanced on the shoulders, with pots of holy Ganga water hanging on either side.
The pots must not touch the ground at any time until the water is offered.
Devotees often walk barefoot, wearing orange or saffron clothes, and chant "Bol Bam" or "Har Har Mahadev".
🔧 How to Do Kavid - Kanwar Yatra
(Step-by-Step Guide)
1. Choose the Pilgrimage Route:
Common starting points: Haridwar, Rishikesh, Gangotri, Gaumukh, Allahabad, Patna.
Common destinations: Baidyanath Dham, Kashi Vishwanath, Neelkanth Mahadev, Pura Mahadev, Trimbakeshwar, etc.
2. Prepare Your Kavad:
It is a bamboo or metal structure with two balanced pots.
Decorate it with Om symbols, trishul, bells, flowers, and saffron cloth.
Place two containers or cans to collect and carry water.
3. Follow the Rules of Kavid - Kanwar Yatra:
Wear saffron/orange clothes.
Do not let the Kanwar touch the ground.
Maintain celibacy, discipline, vegetarian food, and cleanliness.
Avoid anger, lies, and disrespectful behavior.
Refrain from using vehicles (unless part of the "Dak Kanwar").
4. Fetching Ganga Jal (Holy Water):
Go to the chosen Ganga location and collect the water in the pots.
Once filled, begin your return journey to the Shiva temple.
5. Offer Water to Shiva Linga:
Reach your target temple and offer the Ganga Jal on the Shiva Linga, often chanting “Har Har Mahadev” or “Bol Bam”.
Many devotees do it on Shravan Mondays (Sawan Somwar).
🏃♂️ Types of Kanwars:
Type Description
Dak Kanwar Devotees run or jog to complete the Yatra fast, often in a single day.
Baithi Kanwar Carried in rotation while sitting and resting.
Khadhi Kanwar Kept standing when resting (pots never touch the ground).
Kharna Kanwar Done for wish fulfillment after observing fasting.
⚠️ Important Notes:
Medical fitness is important — it involves walking/running up to 100–200 km.
Devotees tie bandages or supports to their knees and ankles for safety.
Some carry even heavier kavads, like in your photo — often as acts of intense devotion or vow fulfillment.
