Описание: 🛠️ Back in March of 2011, I was a middle school student obsessed with the technicalities of nuclear energy. Back then, you could’ve asked me for a list of differences between RBMKs, CANDUs, BWRs, ABWRs, etc., and I would’ve given you a comprehensive overview of what’s what.

🌊 Coincidentally, March of 2011 was also the month which put the unassuming Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan on the map for everyone, bringing the world a worthy contender to a different town, Chernobyl. The Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, and the resulting hydrogen explosions and nuclear meltdown at Fukushima stole my attention back then. I recall very vividly that I would be glued to a physical newspaper (time flies, doesn’t it?) every single morning during a lengthy bus ride to catch up on the latest news from Japan, waiting eagerly to see how the events would unfold.

⏳ Fast forward to April 2024, a couple of weeks after the 13th anniversary of said events – the day when I finally gazed into the void of the reactor no. 1 secondary containment vessel at Fukushima Daiichi NPP. I came to Fukushima on April 1st to document the state of the NPP, the exclusion zone, and the quickly disappearing towns that were hastily evacuated once the plant in question had gone haywire.

🌟 I hope that this short documentary piece, to which I dedicated a significant chunk of the past couple of months, will give you some insight into what it feels like to stand face to face with the site of what probably is the world’s worst (or second worst, depending on how we look at it) nuclear disaster.
