Along with cloisonne, filigree inlaid metal art and jade carving, carved lacquer is valued as one of Beijing Eight Imperial Handicrafts. There are two types of lacquer ware base, namely metallic base and non-metallic base. The carved lacquer can be colored in red, black, yellow, green, etc., among which the red dominates, illuminating its nickname as “Tick Red”. Tracking back to lacquerwork, lacquer ware is made of Chinese lacquer that is repeatedly applied up to adequate thickness for further carvings. Called as Art of Time, it takes over 100 handcraft processes during a long time to create an exquisite lacquer ware, including drawing, lacquer-making, painting, carving and polishing.
