Virtual production is the revolutionary approach used to bring impossible worlds, like those in The Mandalorian, to life. By harnessing video game technology, filmmakers project fully three-dimensional landscapes onto massive LED walls, commonly known as “the volume.”

When this technique—often simply called virtual production—first gained attention, it was everywhere. It was hailed as a game-changing, one-size-fits-all solution that could transform filmmaking forever. The promise was incredible: shoot anywhere, at any time of day, under any conditions, for as long as you wanted.

And then, almost overnight, the buzz seemed to fade. So what happened?

To explore that question—and to untangle the many myths surrounding virtual production—I met with Phil Griffiths from Framesync, one of the world leaders in this field. He gave me a behind-the-scenes tour of a virtual production stage at Solent University, helping uncover why this groundbreaking technology appeared to vanish from the spotlight.

We also dug into why there’s such widespread misunderstanding about what virtual production actually is—and why some projects that used it looked stunning, while others… let’s just say, ran into a few problems.
