Get out of the abstract, and learn to use Number System in the REAL WORLD to transpose, play by ear, song write, and communicate with pros! Number System is THE concept that allows many musicians to begin playing professionally. Once you know it, you'll never want to go back to letters!
Note on 3m as 1/3:
In many songs the 3rd note of the major scale is expressed as a 1/3 chord rather than 3m. It makes the foundation of the chord the 3rd note of the scale but the chord is MAJOR rather than minor. This 1/3 is so common that I'd thought I'd mention as you'll soon see it on a number chart. Other common slash chords seen are 4/6 and 5/1.
b (flat) and # (sharp) in number system:
Something you'll see sometimes on a number chart is b7 (pronounced "flat 7") or other various numbers like b5 (sometimes written as #4, pronounced "sharp 4"). Whenever you want to play a note that's outside the scale, then you can designate it as sharp or flat from the scale note. So if we're in the G major scale, the b7 is F. (The 7 is F# so if we "flat the 7" the note is F.)
Chord extensions:
When you need to add a chord extension to a number, you just add it---simple as that.
Here's some examples. Let's say we're in the key of G....
Gsus4 = 1sus4 (sometimes typed as 14 to save space)
A7 = 27
Cadd9 = 4add9
Dsus2 = 5sus2 (sometimes typed as 52 to save space)
Em7 = 6m7
