The bill, introduced in April by Republican Senator Bernie Moreno (Ohio) and Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin (Michigan), would codify into law a regulation the Biden administration imposed in January 2025 that effectively bars Chinese automakers from selling passenger vehicles in the US, citing national security concerns over data collection from connected vehicles. The bill specifically targets vehicles designed in China with advanced connectivity and vehicle software. A similar version has already been introduced in the House.
