Описание: To any native Cantonese speakers out there, please excuse my poor pronunciation. I’m merely an ABC who dropped out of Chinese school and grew up in a suburban town with a paltry Asian population. “In the Mood For Love” helped forge my love for cheongsams as an adult. There were many years where I didn’t want to be associated with my culture for a variety of reasons, most especially: the lack of positive Asian representation in media. As my love for vintage fashion developed, the appreciation for the cheongsam (especially in the 50’s + 60’s) gradually grew too. It would be a dream to own a cheongsam made by Leung Long Kong. After stalking his Instagram, it looks like he’s still active and sewing?!

I recommend watching “The Hand” by Wong Kar Wai (2020) if you haven’t already. It also puts cheongsams at the core of the story, plus it stars the gorgeous Gong Li and a very handsome Chang Chen as an apprentice tailor.

This video took me longer than expected to finish because 2025 sucks. My ideas are never ending, but it takes time to write them all down and translate them into semi-cohesive ideas. Thank you for watching and interacting with this video essay! More to come in the new year.
