How to Cross into Mexico at Laredo: Why I Recommend Bridge #1 for TIP and FMM
If you're planning to drive into Mexico through Laredo, this video walks you through the process I personally use — entering via Bridge #1, not Bridge #2 or the Colombia crossing.
Quick Overview:
Bridge #1 offers the most direct access to the TIP (Temporary Import Permit) and FMM (tourist permit) office.
After crossing, it's just two quick right turns to reach the building where you complete the paperwork.
The whole process usually takes less than 5 minutes.
You're also right next to the area where you can wait for a federal police escort, which will guide you safely to the first toll booth outside Nuevo Laredo.
Why I Don't Use the Colombia Crossing:
While some travelers recommend the Colombia bridge to avoid traffic or potential issues in Nuevo Laredo, I find the extra drive out of the way. If you stick to the speed limit and follow the main road, Laredo is straightforward and efficient. In all my years of crossing here, I’ve only had one issue (a bribe attempt tied to speeding), which was entirely avoidable.
Key Benefits of Bridge #1:
Fast access to documents
Minimal traffic when timed right
Simple navigation (the road from the bridge becomes the highway south — no complex turns or signage)
Whether you're heading to Monterrey or further south, this video is especially helpful for first-timers and visual learners who want to see the route before making the drive.
Feel free to drop any questions in the comments.
Safe travels.
