The legendary Bures dragon was created in 2012 as part of Her Majesty's Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Mrs SAA said it was a shame my first video of the dragon didn't really give any sense of scale.
... and of course she is right!
So here we have a different view of this wonderful landmark, shot just as the sun was beginning to set. Enjoy!
In the heart of the Stour valley lies a deep, dark, allegedly bottomless lake... the source of a sinister legend that dates back hundreds of years...
From the murky depths of this lake so says legend , emerged a dragon which terrorised local villagers, devouring sheep and the occasional virgin (I saw neither while there).
So powerful was the story of the Wyrm, a medieval word for dragon or serpent that a nearby village was renamed Wormingford.
The dragon is carved and picked out in chalk, measuring 75x95 metres and can be seen along the Cuckoo Hill to Clickett bridle path on the east side of Bures and viewed from St Stephen's Chapel.
Please be aware it is on private land but is seen easily from the public footpath that runs between Cuckoo Hill and Clicket Hill.
Of course the best way to see it is from 120 metres up, although even then it was still almost too big to fit in (as the actress said to the Bishop).
So what more can I tell you?
Well its a wonderful part of the UKs mythical medieval history, as outlined below.
The dragon's presence in Bures in the the Chronicle of St Albans Abbey written in 1405 by Henry de Blaneford 'In these days there appeared lately an evil dragon of excessive length with a huge body, crested head, saw like teeth & elongated tail in the land around the village of Bures near Sudbury, which destroyed & killed a herd of sheep.
The servants of Sir Richard Waldegrave who owns the land haunted by the dragon came forth to shoot it with bows, but its body resisted the arrows which sprang forth from its ribs as if they were metal or hard stone & from the spines of its back with a jangling as if they were hitting bronze plates, and flew far away because its skin was impenetrable.
Almost the whole county was summoned to slaughter it, but when it saw that it was to be shot at again, it fled into the marsh, hid in the reeds & was seen no more'.
He is the subject of a 15thc wall painting in Wissington church three miles east of Bures.
If you would like to try and wake the dragon who fled the pitchfork and arrows brigade it is somewhere near the mere at Wormingford but be warned...
According to local legend, a mysterious bubbling can still be seen in one corner of the mere where the dragon disappeared which is allegedly where the Devil - who had taken the form of the beast seen by villagers - still lives to this day.
Suffice to say I didn't check it out!
So just a short video, I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for watching & as always.
Cheers.
