STORYLINE:
Thousands of workers walked off their jobs in Rome on Friday to protest Italy's government spending plans and demand better public services.

Italy’s powerful trade union, CGIL, called for a general strike on Friday with demonstrators marching in opposition to Premier Giorgia Meloni’s 2026 budget.

Protesters carried banners calling for a stop to rearmament policies and demanding investment in health, education, and industrial policies.

Public transport disruptions are expected and schools are closed.
