When we think of human ancestry in Eurasia, we imagine a vast continent filled with diverse peoples and cultures. But what if I told you that behind this diversity lies just three ancient ancestral sources, each with a unique story.
Let’s start with the East Eurasians—the ancestors of modern populations like the Japanese, Native Americans, and even Aboriginal Australians. They likely took the eastern route through the Zagros Mountains, eventually spreading across Asia and Oceania. But they weren’t confined to the East—some, like the ancient Bacho Kiro people in Paleolithic Bulgaria, show that East Eurasian ancestry reached even into prehistoric Europe.
Then we have the West Eurasians. They began to take shape in the Late Upper Paleolithic, centered around the Mediterranean. This group would go on to form the genetic foundation of most modern Europeans, North Africans, and parts of the Middle East.
But the Basal Eurasians are different.
They are the most genetically divergent of the three. In fact, West and East Eurasians are closer to each other than either is to the Basal Eurasians. This is because Basal Eurasians split off very early—before the other non-Africans ever mixed with Neanderthals.
The Basal Eurasians inhabited Arabia and Mesopotamia, and ended up contributing to the Dzduzuana, a population that later served as the core for European, Middle Eastern, and South Asian genetics. That’s why Middle Easterners, Europeans, and South Asians have a lot of basal Eurasian DNA, while folks in Japan or Australia don’t.
