Welcome to my Berlin film! It's a study of relationships between buildings and people. It tells a history of Berlin between two world wars, but not in terms of events that took place, but of places that took shape against the backdrop of those events. It's about how buildings can help us see society, and show us the truth about the time in which they were put up, sometimes better then events can.
00:00 ACT 1 THE BACKDROP, more then a lost war...a world has come to an end
trauma of the great war, in the wake of it, centuries of pent up change flood the city and make a mess. It begins with the trauma of the great war. We must understand it, to make sense of what comes afterwards. It was a trauma that made people loose faith in everything that went before. Do they tear it all down or do they go into denial? Or, is it possible make space for the new by giving people freedoms and a say in how they're governed? What will be the price? Political chaos and violence follow as the new democracy (the Weimar Republic) struggles to take root...
(Spirit of 1914, November Revolution of 1918–1919, Proclamation of the republic in Germany, Ebert–Groener pact , Murders of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht;)
04:27 ACT 2 PAPER HEAVENS, young architects draw up never before seen forms of buildings
Young architects want to build a world that looks nothing like the one that brought them into the trenches, they end up adopting a new radically undercoated style.
There's no money for building in the postwar chaos, so the architects turn to the blank slates of their papers where, unconstrained by reality, they are free to image completely new forms the likes of which have never been imagined...
09:05 ACT 3 PAPERWORK, golden 20s and the birth of the housing project
The Weimar Republik has solved hyperinflation and it's time for the golden 20s, and for building! Priority is housing for the people, very different form overcrowded tenements built before the war. Revolutionary architects are ready with ideas but now their ideas must confront reality. Turns out that to get things build in a different way, you must first do some social constructing, that is you have to do some Paperwork!
( Mietskaserne/rental barracks, Greater Berlin Act, 1920, building code change and introduction of the rent tax, Martin Wagner )
14:46 ACT 4 UTOPIA ON THE EDGE
we look at a a Housing Estate built on the outskirts of Berlin during the Weimar Republik. This is the Horseshoe estate, probably the most famous of Berlins modernist housing estates. This is modernist housing at it's most wholesome, Not only was it's architectural style revolutionary but also the quality of it's apartments: light, fresh air and sunshine for all, and gardens all around. But it's just a half of the story, the other half is across the street, the Krugpful Estate, built at the same time but in a very different style. Healthy Democracy at work or a sign of troubles to come?
18:04 ACT 5 ROOFS AMONG THE PINE TREES
we look at another wholesome modernist housing project, the Onkel Toms Hütte (Uncle Tom's Cabin) . It was built on the edge of a Grunewald forest, an area occupied only by the villas of the rich. We note it's various wholesome qualities but also that the use of the new style has became more dogmatic here, with flat roofs used on all houses. These strange roofs provoke a reaction from the conservative wing which argues for a different approach and architecture becomes a part of the culture wars as German society become increasingly polarized.
22:30 MEANWHILE...
A young architect is drawn into a new political movement, as economic crisis puts an end to building in Berlin and brings the polarization of society to it's tragic climax
24:45 ACT 6 REICHSTAG'S SWAN SONG
As Hitler is being sworn in as chancellor inside of it, the Reichstag building reflects on the legacy of the dying Republic, what they built and what they failed to get built...
27:05 ACT 7 ONE ROOF SYSTEM...
29:15 ACT 8 FUHRERS DREAM, PEOPLES REALITY
33:54 CONCLUSION....a pile of rubble
