ABSTRACT
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted college students’ lives, exacerbating mental health challenges. Male students, in particular, experienced heightened stress due to social isolation, disrupted routines, limited support, and academic uncertainty, resulting in increased anxiety, depression, loneliness, and burnout. Compared to females, males were less likely to seek help, highlighting the need for targeted male interventions. PURPOSE: This study implemented a mental health self-care program to equip male college students with the knowledge and skills to recognize, manage, and seek support for stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout. The intervention aimed to reduce stigma, promote self-care, foster resilience, and improve students’ overall well-being while creating a supportive campus environment that empowers male students to prioritize mental health. METHODS: Fifty male students from Tennessee State University participated in an interactive session facilitated by the Campus Health Center. Participants were recruited through social media, flyers, and peer networks. Digital consent and coded identifiers ensured confidentiality. Pre- and post-surveys assessed stress, anxiety, depression, coping strategies, and awareness of available resources. Students who completed the entire intervention were entered into a raffle to receive one of five $25 gift cards. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: The intervention is designed to improve a male understanding of anxiety, depression, burnout, and fatigue; reduce stigma; and increase awareness of campus and community mental health resources. Results will develop future male-focused interventions and strengthen campus male support systems. DISCUSSION: This study addresses gaps in mental health literacy and self-care among male students by fostering a network that promotes education, awareness, and mental wellness. The program encouraged open dialogue, resilience, and early intervention, aiming to reduce stigma, enhance emotional health, and improve overall physical, academic, and emotional outcomes for male college students.
