In March 1945, the Allies launched Operation Varsity, the largest single-day airborne operation in history. As Allied forces crossed the Rhine, over 16,000 paratroopers and glider troops dropped into Germany in broad daylight, filling the sky with aircraft, parachutes, and gliders.
Units from the United States Army and British Army landed deep behind German lines to seize bridges, roads, and high ground—ensuring the Rhine crossing succeeded and preventing German counterattacks.
Unlike earlier airborne assaults, Varsity was brutally direct: heavily defended drop zones, intense anti-aircraft fire, and high casualties. But it worked. Within days, Allied forces had broken into the heart of Germany, accelerating the final collapse of the Third Reich.
