Most relationships are built on a physical basis, and an entire industry has formed around the idea that better physical intimacy can heal dysfunctional partnerships. Sex coaching, tantric retreats, intimacy therapy, and other solutions all offer the prospect of a happier relationship on the other side of more physical connection but completely neglect the other pillars of intimacy.

How can there be passion if there is a lack of tenderness and compassion? How can relationship success be achieved if both partners don't make an effort to understand each other's emotional, intellectual, and deeper spiritual needs? In this materialistic world fueled by physical needs and desires, it's easy to forget that true intimacy exists beneath (and beyond) the physical layer of experience.

What the soul craves in a union is the merging of heart, mind, and spirit, which means one must first become intimate with their own soul before accomplishing this with a partner.

Every human being is faced with the challenge of learning to be intimate with themselves in order to experience a beautiful degree of intimacy with others.
