Subaru started using thermos control valves instead of simple thermostats in model year 2019 for the Forester and later for many other models. But up until model years 2021-2022, the new valve appeared to be defective and overreacted to any coolant vapors, which led to valve getting stuck and potential engine overheating.
In 2023, Subaru faced a class action lawsuit and as a result of that issued an extended warranty under customer satisfaction program. The warranty comes under the TSB number 09-119-24 and it covers certain model years of the Forester, Outback, and also Crosstrek.
