What is roll-to-roll processing, and why is it revolutionizing the way we make flexible devices? Roll-to-roll (R2R) processing is a continuous manufacturing technique where functional materials are applied to flexible substrates, like plastic or metal foils, as they move through a series of precisely controlled steps. It’s similar to newspaper printing, but instead of ink, we’re depositing materials used in solar cells, batteries, fuel cells, pharmaceuticals, and more.
In this video, we break down the entire process, from unwinding the substrate roll, to coating it with solutions (often called inks or slurries), drying or curing the coated layer, and finally rewinding the finished material. Each step is integrated into a streamlined system that enables high-throughput, consistent, and scalable production of thin, flexible devices.
