Dr. Karla Eslinger has spent more than 30 years serving Missouri’s students, teachers, and schools – and today, she leads the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
A lifelong educator from a family of educators, Karla began her journey in a classroom filled with eager first and second graders. That first day as a teacher left a lasting impression. A moment she still calls “pretty special.”
From classroom teacher to principal, and then superintendent in Ava and West Plains, Dr. Eslinger brought leadership, compassion, and a deep commitment to public education in every role.
Her passion for improving education led her to state and national impact. After retiring as superintendent, she joined the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as assistant commissioner. Later, as a senior analyst for AEM Corporation, she provided expert guidance to the U.S. Department of Education, serving schools across the country.
In 2019, Karla brought her voice to Jefferson City, elected to the Missouri House of Representatives, and then the State Senate, where she championed educational access, equity and excellence.
Now, as Missouri’s top education official, she continues to be a tireless advocate for students and teachers across the state.
In 2025, she was honored as one of USA Today’s Women of the Year – a national recognition of her transformative leadership.
Dr. Eslinger lives on a family farm in Wasola, Missouri with her husband David, a fellow retired educator. Their two daughters also serve as public school teachers, continuing the family legacy. Together they celebrate their greatest joy – four grandchildren.
We are proud to congratulate Dr. Karla Eslinger, recipient of the 2025 Missouri State University Alumni Association Alumni Award for Excellence in Public Affairs.
