The Iowa State Fair has arguably the biggest annual draft horse show in the country, with not one but four different breed shows. Two of those (Shire & Clydesdale) even being national championship shows.
However there are other horse shows at this fair, including the very exciting annual Iowa State Fair Cowgirl Queen contest.
Held the first Friday evening of the fair, cowgirls from throughout Iowa are judged on appearance, knowledge, and horsemanship - especially horsemanship.
The highlight of the contest is the exciting sliding stop every contestant has to attempt. The more dirt that's kicked up into the air, the more the crowd cheers. Immediately afterwards, each contestant performs the traditional cowgirl queen contest hand gestures.
In this video I present in ascending order (in my opinion), the best sliding stops from this year's contest.
