Dronfield Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around six miles south of Sheffield, is the town of Dronfield.

Geographically Dronfield is situated along the River Drone, just four miles east of the Peak District National Park. A settlement has existed here since the 11th century or earlier, as it appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Dranefeld'. It is believed to have been a target of William the Conqueror's 'harrying of the north', which was a campaign to punish non-cooperation between various northern towns (or technically midland in this case) and the new Norman rule.

From the 16th century Dronfield was a relatively industrial settlement. Owing to the surrounding sheep farms, it had a number of wool producers engaged in spinning and weaving in what was a cottage industry at the time. Soap making and tanning were also emerging industries around this time. A market charter was granted to Dronfield in 1662 by Charles II.

Between the 16th and 19th century a number of coal and lead mining pits opened up in proximity to Dronfield. Its proximity to the Peak District made lead an abundant commodity. As such, a number of large houses in the town were built by the lead merchants of the time.

In 1870 Dronfield railway station opened on the Midland Main Line situated between Chesterfield and Sheffield. In 1967 it was closed due to the Beeching cuts, but was reopened again in 1981. From 2008 Northern Trains have operated a regular service running between Leeds and Nottingham, stopping in Dronfield.

Dronfield is home to the oldest football club in the world still playing to this day. The club is, confusingly enough, Sheffield F.C. who were founded in 1857. In 2001 the club bought the Coach & Horses ground in Dronfield, which has since been dubbed 'The Home of Football'.

Famous people from Dronfield include Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen and footballer Gary Cahill.
