Mexico 🇲🇽 Doors of San Cristóbal de las Casas

Описание: After my video slideshow of doors from Oaxaca, I compiled a selection of doors from the streets of San Cristóbal de las Casas too (which is in the Chiapas state, Mexico), to see if there were similarities and differences.

Many of San Cristóbal's doors are vintage colonial doors (similar in design to some of Oaxaca's colonial doors), which are generally arched at the top and have columns on the sides of the door; apart from the colonial style, San Cristóbal has doors (and architecture) influenced by its Mayan indigenous heritage. Mayan structures are generally pyramidal or rectangular, often with rectangles within rectangles, and some of the doors in this slideshow reflect that. All of the doors have lots to catch one’s eye - the layers of colours, the brickwork around, the peeling wood. I love the many stories that shout out from each layer of paint or each exposed brick of old doors, stories about who has walked through them throughout the decades or centuries.

San Cristóbal de las Casas is in the Central Highlands of the Mexican state of Chiapas, at an elevation of 2,100 metres (6,900 feet). The city’s historic center has maintained its Spanish colonial layout, with narrow cobblestone streets, roofs covered in red clay tile and wrought iron balconies with flowers. The facades of the buildings vary from Colonial to Baroque to Neoclassical to Moorish, painted in various colors; many of the doors reflect this heritage and architecture, interspersed with San Cristóbal's indigenous heritage. There is a high proportion of indigenous peoples in the city who contribute significantly to the thriving sector of crafts and folk art.
