How to check what benefits and financial support you can get.

This video has audio, chapters and subtitles.

You might be able to claim certain benefits and financial support, even if you work, have savings or own a home.

To check what you could get, you can:

use the GOV.UK living cost tool - to find out what benefits and financial help may be available
use a benefits calculator - for a detailed check based on your personal circumstances

On GOV.UK, there is a living cost tool that can help you check what benefits or financial support may be available to you.

To start, select the ‘Check what you can get’ button. Answer the questions to get information on what financial help you may be eligible for.

A benefits calculator can give you a more detailed estimate of what you could claim and how much you might get.

On GOV.UK, there are links to benefits calculators which are independent, free to use and anonymous.

To use a calculator, you will need to provide information about:

your savings
your income, including your partner's income if you have one
any benefits you already get
your monthly outgoings, such as rent, mortgage, Council Tax and childcare costs

A Benefits calculator will not be able to give you a detailed answer if you’re:

under 18
a student
not a British or Irish citizen
living outside the UK
living full-time in a residential care or a nursing home
on strike
a prisoner

This is because it is more complex to work out what benefits you could get.

You can also use GOV.UK to find a local benefits adviser.

They can give you further information on what help and support may be available to you.

To find out more about what benefits and financial support you can get, including links to benefits calculators, go to GOV.UK and search for “check benefits”

This video is a guide only.

Benefits calculators can only give a helpful estimate based on the information entered at the time. They are not a full assessment or a claim for financial support.
