This video is the first in a short series about independent advocacy and why it matters.
Following on from my previous video explaining what an independent advocate is, this episode looks specifically at mental health advocacy and the important difference between statutory advocacy, such as Independent Mental Health Advocates (IMHA), and the way the term “mental health advocate” is often used online.
In this video, I explain:
What mental health advocacy actually means
What the IMHA role is and who it is for
Why statutory advocacy carries legal duties and human rights protections
How this differs from awareness based or online advocacy
Why understanding the difference matters for people using mental health services
This isn’t about criticising lived experience voices or online support communities.
It’s about clarity, rights, and ensuring people know what support they are legally entitled to.
