Reviving History: SARC Marmon Herrington | WWII Vehicles Uncovered - EP. 7

Описание: As the world braced for conflict in 1939, the Union of South Africa found itself urgently needing its own armoured reconnaissance vehicles. Their solution began with mounting a newly designed armoured body onto the standard Ford 3-ton General Service Truck chassis. This rear-wheel-drive adaptation was officially designated the South African Reconnaissance Car Mk I. Between 1940 and 1941, some 135 of these pioneering vehicles were produced, laying the groundwork for South Africa’s growing armoured capabilities.

At the same time, the Marmon-Herrington company offered a crucial upgrade: since the early 1930s, they had sold conversion kits that transformed ordinary trucks into all-wheel-drive platforms. By applying these kits to the Ford chassis, South African engineers not only achieved four-wheel drive but also improved ground clearance, making the vehicle more suited to varied and challenging terrain. This enhanced design became known as the South African Reconnaissance Car Mk II, and a total of 887 rolled off the lines by mid-1941.

Continual refinement brought about the Mk III, with an impressive 2,630 units produced. Though officially referred to by their South African designations, enthusiasts across the globe commonly recognize the entire series by a single, defining name: Marmon-Herrington.
