The U.S. Air Force, in cooperation with the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), has completed the first end-to-end qualification flight tests of the new B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb on the B-2 bomber.
On June 29, in an official press release, the National Nuclear Security Administration revealed two successful test flights were carried out.
U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Michael Lutton, NNSA’s Principal Assistant Deputy Administrator for Military Application, said in a statement,
“These qualification flight tests demonstrate the B61-12 design meets system requirements and illustrate the continued progress of the B61-12 life extension program to meet national security requirements”
As per the report on 9th June, a B-2A Spirit stealth bomber from the Air Force’s 419th Test and Evaluation Squadron flew from Edwards Air Force Base in California and dropped the bomb with an inactive warhead on the Tonopah Test Range.
The U.S. military expects the B61-12 also known as the B61 Mod 12, to replace all existing versions of B 61 that the B 61- 3, -4, -7, and -11 in the active stockpile.
