It’s genuinely exciting to see brand new film cameras being designed and released, and these are our two favorite new film cameras in recent memory. Both come in around the same price and both are compact, but they offer very different shooting experiences.

The Lomo MCA is a modern, feature-packed autofocus point & shoot that shoots standard 35mm. You get 36 frames per roll, a fast 32mm f2.8 lens that’s full of character, and an impressive amount of control for a camera this size: autofocus and zone focus, auto exposure, program mode, aperture priority, full manual, exposure compensation, DX reading, flash modes, self-timer, and multiple exposures. It’s well built with a metal body, manual advance, and manual rewind. The viewfinder is on the smaller side and takes a little getting used to, but it’s not an issue once you get the hang of it. Wide open the lens has a lot of personality, and stopped down it delivers a cleaner, sharper results.

The Pentax 17 is a half frame, zone focus camera, which means you’re estimating distance instead of relying on autofocus. It takes a bit of practice, but after a couple of rolls it becomes second nature. The big advantage is efficiency: a 36-exposure roll gives you 72 frames. While half frame means less image area, the Pentax 17 consistently surprises us with its image quality, especially when paired with its excellent light meter. Good exposure leads to better scans, and this camera absolutely delivers there. Its 40mm equivalent lens has proven itself for everyday shooting, travel, street, and candid work, and we’ve even made large prints from it.

Both cameras are excellent. It really comes down to autofocus versus zone focus, and how hands-on you want your shooting experience to be. We’d love to hear which one you’d choose and why.
