STORYLINE:
Authorities in India were investigating a deadly car blast in the capital that killed at least eight people and injured several others, officials said Tuesday.
The explosion on late Monday occurred close to the historic Red Fort in New Delhi.
Authorities have not determined the cause of the blast, but senior police officials told The Associated Press that a case has been registered under anti-terrorism laws.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.
The explosion Monday evening was believed to have originated from a Hyundai i20 car that had stopped at a traffic signal, Home Minister Amit Shah said.
The blast triggered a fire that engulfed several nearby cars and rickshaws.
Authorities said the injured were being treated at a government hospital.
An investigation into the cause is being led by the National Investigation Agency, India’s federal anti-terrorism body, along with forensic experts.
