Policy Dialogue on Sustaining and Deepening Economic Reforms in Nigeria | March 12, 2026

In this panel intervention, Dr Muhammad Sani Abdullahi reflects on Nigeria’s transition from a period of economic crisis to what he describes as a phase of “fragile stability,” underscoring the need for sustained policy discipline to consolidate recent macroeconomic gains.

He discusses developments in the foreign exchange market, trends in inflation, and the importance of maintaining stability to support inclusive economic growth. His remarks also highlight the role of financial sector reforms — including banking sector recapitalisation and development finance initiatives — in strengthening the capacity of institutions to support businesses, expand investment and generate employment.

Dr Abdullahi further emphasises the importance of coordination between monetary and fiscal authorities in building growth-enabling sectors, improving business confidence and enhancing Nigeria’s external position. He points to indicators such as the Purchasing Managers’ Index and recent balance-of-payments performance as signals of emerging opportunities for sustained expansion.

The remarks were delivered during a high-level panel discussion convened by Agora Policy with support from the Nigeria Economic Stability and Transformation (NEST) programme of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
