He was an African man from Palos de la Frontera who served as a pilot on Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas in 1492, demonstrating the early role of people of African descent in European voyages of discovery. In 1499, he commanded his own expedition to the Venezuelan coast, becoming the first navigator to find commercial success in the New World.
