What was really happening on the campus of Howard University during the early 1900s?
Behind the pride, prestige, and intellectual power of one of America’s most famous Historically Black Colleges was a complicated reality many people never talk about — racial passing, colorism, class divisions, and the social hierarchy inside Black elite institutions.
In this video we explore the secret history of passing at Howard University, the experiences of light-skinned Black Americans who could move between racial worlds, the tensions that existed inside Black colleges, and how ideas about beauty, privilege, and identity shaped campus life.
This story connects to a larger history involving the Black bourgeoisie, the Blue Vein Society, colorism in Black America, and the pressures placed on students navigating race, class, and opportunity during the Jim Crow era.
Some people passed for survival.
Some passed for opportunity.
And some refused to pass at all.
This is the history they didn’t teach in school.#HowardUniversity
