Описание: What is Ulcerative Colitis and what does it mean if you suffer from it?

Ulcerative Colitis is a condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed.

It’s one of the 2 conditions that fall under the category of inflammatory bowel disease and most commonly develops between the ages of 10 and 40.

And whilst the exact cause isn’t quite known yet, you are more likely to get it if a close family member has it.

The condition’s characterised by inflammation of the gut wall and ulcers developing there, causing symptoms such as diarrhoea, often mixed with blood, crampy abdominal pains and having to go to the toilet frequently.

In some cases, there are other parts of the body that are affected too and it brings an increased risk of developing colon cancer.

Doctors will perform blood and stool tests to check for inflammation and infections.

And camera tests like a colonoscopy will be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

The treatment includes various medications that help ease symptoms and prevent them from returning.

Severe flare-ups are managed in the hospital and in some cases, surgery is needed to remove the affected areas of the bowel.

Despite this, most people have a normal life expectancy and with modern treatments, manage to maintain a near-normal life.
