In the beginning the heavens and earth were without form. This condition is what we call the primordial state, and the same can be said for the beginning of the human soul.
In the primordial state of the soul, that is, man’s completely fallen condition, original to his birth in this life without the graces of baptism, we are in a state of separation and isolation from our Creator. It is truly like God hovers over the waters of the deep of our soul, but He has not entered. Then God said, “Let there be light.” And so He initiates the beginning, calling the soul out of darkness, entering the soul, and giving it the means to be able to see for the first time.
