This presentation at the 7th International Biologging Symposium (BLS) in October 2021 introduces Desert Star's underwater acoustic sound detection capable SeaTag pop-up satellite tags (PSAT), and early results. Pop-up satellite tags are commonly used to track and observe marine animals, including many species of fish and shark. Desert Star's SeaTag devices now introduce the ability for PSAT to detect specific sounds of interest, store raw sound samples in its large FLASH memory, and transmit 'QR code like' representations of sound signatures via the narrow bandwidth ARGOS satellite link.
Tags can be deployed on animals, or as ocean drifters. They may be used for example to detect the presence and help identify the species of whales and dolphins far from coasts where moored acoustic recorders are impractical. Tagged on fish or sharks, the devices can provide important contextual information, for example identifying fishing pressure from vessel sounds or the proximity of predators from their vocalizations. Moored in remote marine protected areas (MPA), the devices may monitor for and then report human activity or illegal fishing, Along remote coasts or in offshore water, sound detection enabled SeaTag devices have the potential to identify the passing of speed boats that indicate possible smuggling or piracy activity.
Desert Star Systems will provide 'apps' that are run on the detector for specific underwater acoustic detection, analysis and satellite transmission requirements. In addition, a Software Developer Kit (SDK) that will allow researchers and others to develop their own 'apps' for these versatile sound detection, analysis and satellite transmission devices.
