In 2011 Panerai released the first "Bronzo" which quickly became a highly collectible watch due to the unusual choice of material. There are now five iterations of the bronze Submersible, with brown, green, and blue dials. The PAM01074 is a first because of its smaller case size of 42mm. The availability of this watch in this case size is sure to welcome a new group of fans to the bronzo community since there are many watch aficionados who have been uncomfortable with the previous versions large 47mm size.
On the face of it, bronze was a peculiar choice of case material for Panerai. However, it is not unprecedented. In the 1980's Panerai created "Mille Metri" prototype watches in a variety of case material including bronze, albeit coated in a black PVD.
The bronzo has such fervent adoration from Panerai fans, and now several copycats in the Swiss watch industry because of how the material changes based on the wearer and their wearing habits. It becomes tied closely to the wearers own life story.
The new PAM01074 will be limited to 500 pieces this year.
