Lyrics (ENG)
A swallow was building a nest
It's been building it for nine years
In seven months, it will have been ten years
Come on, my vila (fairy), may God fill your heart with joy!
My dear grey falcon
It's great to walk across Croatia
And see the country
To see a peasant in the village
In his worn-out clothes
He's proudly wearing a red hat on his head
And a white shirt buttoned to the neck
His pants are blue
They match the Croatian Tricolour
Now, that we've sung one song, we're gonna sing another one
Just one, but a decent one
My friend, you are my everything
May the sun warm you
My brothers, if you want to know
I will sing you one song
These modern women!
Brothers, listen to me
As long as she lives with her mother
She is calmer than a sheep
Beautiful, young and decent
Everyone would like to marry her
She doesn't swear, she doesn't speak ill of anyone
She goes to church and prays to God
Once she leaves her mother's nest
She's no longer the same
She starts cursing and does nothing
She opposes her mother-in-law
She drinks coffee five-six times a day
And smokes two packs of cigarettes a day
She doesn't respect her father-in-law or her husband
Her tongue is knee-lenght (she has big mouth)
Get closer to her
It's easy for a drunk to sing
And for a grieving mother to cry
It's hard to be a hat on a fool's head
And to be gold on a dirty neck
It's hard to be an uncle who feeds his nephew
It's hard for a girl to marry a widower
A wolf is not well when crows feed him
A hero is not well when women protect him
It's hard for a barrel that runs dry
It's hard for a donkey in a severe drought
It's hard when the house has a leaky roof
It's even harder when you have a nagging wife
Patch the roof so it doesn't leak
Kiss your wife so she doesn't nag
My dear grey falcon
Lyrics (HR)
Oj, gnijezdo vila 'tica lastavica
A vila ga je devet godinica
I desetu za sedam miseci
Deder, vilo, Bog te veselio, oj!
Siv sokole mili moj
Oj lipo ti je brate pogledati
Kroz Hrvatsku zemlju prošetati
I vidjeti seljaka u selu
U njegovom trošnome odjelu
Na glavi mu dična crvenkapa
Košulja mu bila oko vrata
Krožet gaće modre su mu boje
Znak hrvatske trobojnice to je, oj!
Oj, kad smo jednu i još ćemo jednu
Ova jedna da nam bude vrijedna
O moj kole, moj si svakojako
Sunce mi te ogrijalo žarko
Oj, braćo moja, 'ko želite znati
Jednu ću vam pismu zapivati
Što su danas te moderne žene
Braćo moja, poslušajte mene
Svaka cura dok je u majčice
Mirnija je od svake ovčice
Lipa, mlada, zgodna i poštena
Svak bi 'tija da mu bude žena
Niti psuje, nit' ružno govori
Crkvi iđe i Bogu se moli
A kad ode iz majčina krila
Nije snaja ono što je bila
Počne psovat, ništa neće radit
Svekrvon se pomalo inadit
Pet-šest puta dnevno kavu pije
Cigareta puši dvi kutije
Ne poštiva ni svekra, ni muža
Jezičinu do kolina pruža, oj!
Primakni se njoj
Oj lako ti je pijanu zapivati
I žalosnoj majci zaplakati
Teško j' kapi na šašavoj glavi
Biser zlatu na prljavu vratu
Teško j' stricu kad 'rani sinovca
I curici poći za udovca
Teško j' vuku kojeg vrane rane'
A junaku kad ga žene brane
Teško j' bačvi koja se rasuši
I magarcu na velikoj suši
Teško j' kad je kuća kapavica
Još je teža žena lajavica
Pokrij kuću pa neće kapati
Ljubi ženu pa neće lajati rano, joj!
Siv sokole mili moj
KUD "Sveta Kata” Zemunik Donji is an ensemble that nurtures and passes on local cultural traditions of the Ravni Kotari region since 1996. The group's activities are based on a multi-generational commitment - the group's members include both older residents who are guardians of traditions and younger generations who are passionate about learning local songs, dances and customs. KUD Sveta Kata focuses on recreating unique elements of northern Dalmatian heritage, such as traditional songs i.e. ojkanje, pjevanje uz kolo and the presentation of traditional rituals and dances.
Orzenje (also called Ojkanje) – a traditional style of polyphonic singing, cultivated in Dalmatia, Velebit, Lika, Kodurn, and Karlovac. As described in the Harvard Dictionary of Music: Ojkanje is a particular style of melismatic singing with sharp and long-lasting voice-trembling on syllables “oy” or “hoy”. In 2010 this style was included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage as “Ojkanje singing”, in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
