An Illustrated Journey into the Past of Porvoo

Описание: I created an illustrated journey into Porvoo’s past – perhaps it could even be called a trip of imagination or fantasy. The video captures glimpses of Porvoo as it once was, spanning roughly from the early 1900s to the 1950s. The scenes are not strictly in chronological order, but don’t let that distract you. Those who know Porvoo’s history well may also notice some inaccuracies, for example in the coloring or shapes of buildings, but the main goal here was to convey the atmosphere of the good old days in Porvoo.

How was the video made?
I began by collecting old black-and-white photos from various publications, postcards, and the internet. I then meticulously cleaned the images – removing wear, scratches, smudges, and in some cases, people. After that, I colorized the photos. Once they were colored, I used software to animate the images into video clips. Finally, I edited everything together, adding background music and sound effects for an immersive experience.

And all of this was done mainly with the help of AI tools. The software I used included ChatGPT, Sora, Flow, VEO 2, VEO 3, Adobe Firefly, Flex, Runway, and CapCut. For turning still images into video, I found VEO to be the most effective. I had to use Firefly to remove all children and overly detailed human faces, as otherwise VEO refused to process the footage—though ironically, it later added children back in by itself. The AI also took some creative liberties in the placement and form of buildings, but I removed the most glaring errors.
