Many Couple come to the hospital with some rare diseases like HIV or AIDS. Generally this disease has got a lot of social stigma but people want to conceive and would want to deliver a healthy baby when they are infected with HIV. How is it possible? So let's take different scenarios. First thing what they ask is Doctor I'm HIV negative my husband is HIV positive. Is it safe for me to undergo IVF. Yes. So whenever a person who's negative and husband is positive that means HIV virus is there in him. If they have intercourse definitely this virus will get transmitted to his wife. So what do we do in IVF is we collect the husband's sperm who is HIV positive. We do a sperm washing so that all these viral particles get removed and only the sperm which is free of the HIV virus is used for insemination. So this sperm we inject into wife's oocyte and form embryo and these embryos we will transfer into the wife's uterus. Because of the sperm washing procedure and the viral particles which are totally removed, the transmission of the virus from husband to wife is practically zero. The chances would be about say less than 1 percentage and many people come with this it is a very relatively common scenario here in India. What happens when the white wife is positive and husband is negative? Here also we can try with different method like IUI if IUI doesn't work then we have to go for IVF. In a much common scenario when both of them are positive we don't refuse the treatment we have a different container different tank to store the embryos. So in all these scenarios most important thing is if the wife is affected or if the husband is affected they have to undergo an ART therapy to get the viral load under control. So once when the viral load is under control the outcome in IVF and the transmission of the virus to the baby will be practically nil. Just because a couple has HIV infection either a male or a female in that marriage they should not deter you from going ahead and having a healthy baby.
