We go into detail about how to use self-installing self-extracting pf30 bottom bracket, namely First's GP30. No need for an additional special tool! The GP30's bearing cups are integrated with the sleeve and join together by means of the threads. You install, or press the cups in by engaging the threads and turning the cups until they are seated snugly inside the bb shell. After getting them finger tight use the wrench that comes with this bottom bracket to finish pressing the cups completely into position. There is no left hand thread on the drive side. All threads are conventional since the bb shell is threadless. To extract this bottom bracket, all you need is to loosen each side enough to the point where you can screw them out by hand

If you have a conventional pf30 that you need to install, this tool is the perfect one for the job. There are tools available that work by means of a driver and a hammer. That is, you have to bash the press fit bb cups free of the bb shell. This can damage the cups both from the inside and if you are not careful to have a method to catch them when they "pop" out of the shell. With a tool like this one you simply press the bb cups out into the tool's retaining cup and remove everthing together.

We do one side at a time with this tool. Slot the bottom bracket unit snugly into the bb shell. Screw the press bracket along the bolt until it fits snugly inside the bottom bracket's 30 millimeter diameter. Using the 8 millimeter allen wrench you can press the bb into position with mimimal resistance. Once the bb is sitting snug against the bb shell you simply loosen the tool brackets remove them and repeat the procedure for the non-drive side. The only difference is you need to reverse the direction of the wrench-side bracket. This bracket needs to sit over the freshly installed bottom bracket so it connects flush with the rim of the bb shell. Once the press bracket, the tool component which acts both as a brace and "nut" to the bolt, is sitting snugly against the bb it will press in smoothly and easily with a few turns of the bolt.

Removing pf30 bottom brackets with this tool is just as easy as installing them. The most important part is the split steel-hitch which fits over the end of the driver. The face of the steel-hitch engages the bb cup's internal face evenly around the cup's circumference. With light pressure it pushes the bb cup gently out of the bb shell. The first thing to do is insert the driver then mount the split steel-hitch onto it when it is inside the bottom bracket. A retaining cup slots over the bottom bracket itself. The bottom bracket's not going to pop out and fall to the floor as what can happen if you are not really careful when using an impact tool for press fit bottom bracket removal. Once the retaining cup is snugly against the bb shell rim you can simply turn the bolt and press the bottom bracket out into the retaining cup. Both tool and bb come out together in one piece. A very simple solution. Removing the left non-drive side is even easier since you can insert the driver, with the steel split-hitch already mounted onto it, into the bb shell since there is no 30mm opening but the full 46mm diameter of the bottom bracket shell.
