Sincerely yours, Spectral Anomaly. ✨
They had walked for days across the drowned plains, following the map etched into the dying man’s forearm. The expedition had dwindled to three—Jorah, Vex, and the silent one they called Engineer. The others had either turned back or vanished into the mist without a sound.
The structure loomed ahead, its colossal form breaking the monotonous expanse of dead earth and shallow brackish pools. It did not belong here, nor did it belong to any known era of human or alien engineering. The air vibrated with a barely perceptible hum, as though the monolith itself was breathing in slow, measured intervals.
Jorah placed a gloved hand against the cold surface. The metal was impossibly smooth, its edges too precise for natural erosion, yet weathered as if it had stood here for millennia. No inscriptions, no markings—only the structure itself, vast and patient, as if waiting for something to return.
The entrance was already open. That was the first warning they ignored.
Inside, the corridors twisted in ways that defied geometry. Lights flickered at irregular intervals, casting brief glimpses of rooms filled with silent, motionless machinery. They found no bodies, only remnants of movement—a chair slightly turned, a dustless floor where something had stood moments ago.
Then the voices began.
Faint at first, threading through the static of their comms, whispering in languages they did not recognize. Vex's breathing grew ragged. She insisted that the walls had changed, that the door they had entered through was no longer there. Engineer did not speak, only ran his fingers along the seams of the walls, tracing something unseen.
In the depths of the vault, they found the first terminal. The screen flickered to life, its interface a relic of an era that had never existed. The logs contained no names, no timestamps—only a single entry repeating endlessly.
"They are still here. They never left."
Then the doors behind them slammed shut.
And the monolith, at last, exhaled.
