The first of the new US Air Force F-15EX Eagle fighters has taken off. The new fighter, described as the most advanced version of the F-15 ever built, made its maiden flight from St. Louis, Missouri, starting off performing a spectacular "Viking Takeoff", nearly 50 years after the original prototype of the F-15A was launched for the first time.
Last summer, the Air Force announced that Boeing had won a nearly $ 23 billion contract to work on the program, which is designed to meet urgent requirements to adapt to new military technologies.
Of the approximately $ 23 billion covered by the agreement announced by the Air Force on July 13, 2020, $ 1.2 billion will cover the delivery of the first batch of eight aircraft for which Congress has approved funding in the defense budget of the fiscal year 2020.
The Air Force has also asked for money to purchase another 12 aircraft in fiscal year 2021 and hopes to purchase a total of 76 F-15EXs over the next five years. Ultimately, at least 144 jets would replace the old F-15C / D Eagles.
