Does 1 Enoch 46-48 prove that the Messiah, the "Son of Man," preexisted as a conscious person with the LORD prior to the virgin birth? In this video I argue no, and demonstrate why 1 Enoch actually supports a MIND BLOWING Wisdom Christology instead.

Who is the Son of Man in 1 Enoch? Does Enoch prove a pre-incarnate Christ? All of Enoch's visions regarding the Son of Man are visions of the Messiah during the future judgements, new heaven and earth, where all proclaim Yeshua (Jesus), and the eternal kingdom to come. Here is a list of the passages in question, as well other supporting verses.
Look critically at these texts!
1 Enoch 45 verses 1-6
"And this is the second Parable concerning those who deny the name of the dwelling of the holy ones and the Lord of Spirits...*Who are thus preserved for the day of suffering and tribulation.* On that day Mine Elect One shall sit on the throne of glory.. And shall try their works, And their places of rest shall be innumerable...Then will I cause Mine Elect One to dwell among them. And I will transform the heaven and make it an eternal blessing and light.. And I will transform the earth and make it a blessing: And I will cause Mine elect ones to dwell upon it: ..But for the sinners there is judgement impending with Me, So that I shall destroy them from the face of the earth.."
This runs right into 1 Enoch 46 verses 1-3
"*And there I saw One who had a head of days,* and His head was white like wool; and with Him was another whose countenance had the appearance of a man, and his face was full of graciousness, like one of the holy angels. And I asked the angel who went with me and showed me all the hidden things concerning that Son of Man, who he was, and whence he was, and why he went with the Head of Days. And he answered and said to me: This is the Son of Man who has righteousness, with whom righteousness dwells, and who reveals all the treasures of that which is hidden."
The second passage in question is chapter 48; but to provide context, start with 1 Enoch 47 verses 3-4
"In those days I saw the Head of Days when He seated himself upon the throne of His glory.. And the books of the living were opened before Him... And the hearts of the holy were filled with joy; Because the number of the righteous had been offered, And the prayer of the righteous had been heard… before the Lord of Spirits.
Chapter 47 runs right into 1 Enoch 48 verses 2-5 where Enoch juxtaposes the future vision he's seeing, with the beginning, in which the name of the Messiah was foreknown and then jumps back to the future where Jesus is worshiped, corresponding to Philippians 2 verses 10-11
"*At that hour* (END) the Son of Man was named in the presence of the Lord of Spirits, And his name before the Head of Days. Yea, (BEGINNING) even before the sun and the constellations were created, before the stars of the heaven were made, His name was named before the Lord of Spirits... He shall be a staff to the righteous whereon to stay themselves and not fall, And he shall be the light of the Gentiles, And the hope of those who are troubled of heart. All who dwell on earth shall fall down and worship before him,
And will praise and bless and celebrate with song the Lord of Spirits.”
This corresponds with Isaiah 65 verses 17-18
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice forever
in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness."
And Revelation 20 verses 1-2
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.."
Other support from 2nd Temple Period context for the name of the Messiah preexisting in God's foreknowledge can be found in Targum of Zechariah 4 verse 7, Genesis Rabbah 1 verse 4, Tanna Devei Eliyahu, Tractate Pesachim 54a, and others.
Wisdom Christology is the process of applying the attributes, traits, and roles of personified Wisdom to Jesus. I believe this represents how they understood Christ's preexistence, which is notional, including the fact they knew the Messiah would be a human, raised up from among them, and the line of David, not an incarnate second person of the Trinity who's always been there.
Enoch provides a Wisdom Christology which parallels many New Testament passages, and literally predicts that the Son of Man would be the revelation of God's Wisdom, such as:
1 Enoch 48 verse 6/7
“He (Son of Man) has revealed to the saints and to the righteous the wisdom of the Lord of Spirits.”
1 Corinthians 1 verse 24 & 30 “Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.. Christ Jesus.. became to us wisdom from God.”
