How Birds of Prey Drink ~ Eurasian Sparrowhawk at the River

On this occasion, we’ll take a look at an unexpected bird capture from early March.

So there you are, sitting inside a hide on the bank of a river in the morning cold, observing the wagtails you came to the forest for, when suddenly, out of the corner of your eye, you spot a light spot a few meters downstream. "Hey, what’s that... Oh my, a sparrowhawk!" You don’t know if you can dare to move the camera, or if you’ll scare off this rare visitor. But out of nowhere, the sparrowhawk is drawn to the alarm call of a blackbird, turns its head the other way, I turn the lens toward it (actually toward her, it was a young female), and the memory card starts filling with the first seconds of beautiful footage 🎥

I was thrilled. To film a drinking sparrowhawk, you usually have to set up a special bird bath in an area with little water, then wait for days in the hide, hoping. This was an unexpected chance in the wilderness, and that’s how I like it the most 🥳

At the same time, I’m thankful to the sparrowhawk for not taking out the singing wagtail I was primarily focused on that day. The sparrowhawk is a terror for all small birds, unafraid to even visit garden feeders. When I saw (or rather didn’t see) how quietly and unobtrusively the predator was able to land by the stream, I’m quite surprised that the love-struck wagtail survived in one piece 👀

So that’s how it went. It was a good day! 👌
