In this video, I address common myths and mistakes students make on their LinkedIn profiles that hinder their job search efforts. I emphasize the importance of not branding oneself as an intern and highlight actionable steps to enhance your profile. We delve into specific changes to make, such as maintaining an active and updated profile, strategically showcasing past work experiences, and leveraging the LinkedIn features section to highlight key achievements. I also introduce a LinkedIn checklist for profile optimization.
One of the biggest myths I see in student profiles is how they present themselves, making it harder to land a job. Forget everything—you just need to focus on a few key things.
First, never brand yourself as an "intern." Even if you're fresh out of college, companies don’t actively seek interns. Labeling yourself as one makes it harder to get a job, even if you have experience.
Now, let’s look at a real student profile. She has a mix of posts but not enough. Her title says "Marketing Specialist," but her experience section is filled with short internships—two months, four months, etc. The best approach? Edit it to emphasize social media marketing, removing unnecessary details.
A LinkedIn profile must be updated regularly. If you don’t visit it daily, it won’t yield results. Stop thinking of yourself as a "fresher." Position yourself as a professional, showcasing your role in past projects. Even if you played a small role in a successful campaign, highlight it. Add it to your LinkedIn "Featured" section.
In the "Featured" section, you can add posts, newsletters, articles, or links. Use it to showcase your work. I'll share a LinkedIn checklist—follow it to optimize your profile.
Your LinkedIn settings matter. Keep your profile visible. If you hide your profile, people won’t find you. Open settings allow recruiters and connections to engage with your profile. Ensure your name, headline, and activity settings allow maximum visibility.
Now, start identifying jobs and visiting company profiles. Follow companies in your industry, engage with their posts, and comment thoughtfully. The more you comment, the more traction and profile views you get. This is a simple yet powerful way to get noticed.
Another underutilized feature is alumni networking. Visit your college's LinkedIn page, filter alumni by graduation year, and connect with those in your target industry. Alumni connections are valuable—they’re more likely to respond and share job opportunities.
If you're a first-year student, connect with alumni 3-5 years ahead of you. These professionals can offer insights and referrals, making your job search much easier.
Start now—optimize your profile, engage actively, and build your network. The more you do this, the faster you'll land opportunities.
First stop thinking that you are a fresher and who will give you a job. People in the industry need freshers with new ideas.
Show your past work in the featured section. Recruiters and future employers need to see your portfolio.
