Everyone in Pakistan takes water out. Almost no one asks who puts it back. Pakistan crossed the international water scarcity line in 2010, and the water table in Punjab is still falling by roughly a metre every year. In this documentary, entrepreneur and DigiTales host Faizan Syed makes the case that Pakistan's water crisis is not just an environmental issue but an economic one, and visits a Unilever Pakistan and WWF-Pakistan water stewardship project in the Kasur district that is working to recharge groundwater.
Shot in Pattoki, the town known as the City of Flowers, the film traces the water story from a nursery economy built on a shrinking aquifer, to tail-end farmland, to a managed aquifer recharge well near the Unilever Foods plant. It breaks down why water scarcity is an unpriced risk on every Pakistani company's balance sheet, what groundwater recharge actually means, and how interventions like watercourse lining, tree plantation, and floating treatment wetlands work on the ground.
What you'll learn in this video:
Why Pakistan became water-scarce in 2010 (under one million litres of water per person, per year)
How fast Punjab's water table is dropping and why it matters to business
Why one tonne of textile fabric needs around 22,596 m³ of water, and what that means for Pakistan's largest export sector
How the Unilever Pakistan and WWF-Pakistan project targets around 192.5 million litres of water recharged per year across the Lahore and Rahim Yar Khan catchments
What managed aquifer recharge, watercourse lining, plantation, and floating treatment wetlands actually do, built to the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard

No single company can fix Pakistan's water crisis, and this film doesn't pretend otherwise. What it documents is one of the few water stewardship projects in the country that is actually in the ground, doing the slow work of putting water back.
