The Unikorn Alternative - $130 Bakeneko. Sound Test with Dogikon Linears

Board: Open Source Bakeneko by kkatano, version sold by Cannon Keys (https://github.com/kkatano/bakeneko-60)
Board insulation: None
Plate: FR4, gummy o ring mount
Keycaps: GMK WoB, Hangul WoB add on kit
Switches: Dogikon JWK linears lubed with 205g0, TX 65g 14mm springs 105 oiled, and 0.15mm TX Films
Stabilizers: Cherry Snap ins that were included in package, swapped 6.25u wire for a durock wire. Lubed 205g0 on housings and XHT BDZ on wires and spacebar is Holee modded.
Mat: Bento blue deskmat from novelkeys
Cable: Cable Craze

This board is honestly surprising and to get to the point - it's VERY close to the Unikorn. It's designed with an homage to the Unikorn as well as the 356 mini, and it does it well. There are shortcomings in the manufacturing for the Cannon Keys version, as it is cast aluminum instead of CNCed aluminum. It's also painted rather than anodized. It looks a bit rough around the edges but the paint on my unit was pretty ok. It doesn't look even in some places on the inside but that's acceptable in my opinion - this is only $130 dollars from CK.

The board sounds damn good. During the stream, I tested it with Inks on Fr4 and it did sound very close to my Unikorn with inks on pom half. Shocking close. The difference in sound can be noted in that the Bakeneko sounds a bit hollow. The typing feel and the overall sound signature is very very reminiscent of the Unikorn.

Can it beat the Unikorn? No, I don't think so. Even if the sound/feel was 100% match, the Unikorn has a brass weight, has the TGR prestige, and is overall more collectable. This board can do the job for most people if they just want the sound and feel, but I think those in the hobby to have something cool to collect may end up using this as a daily board or just skip it for something else.

Would I take this over the UTD 356 mini? Probably. The UTD, although amazing, IS a copy board. In terms of collectability, it ain't it.. especially when something like this exists if I just want the sound/feel.

Will I keep my Unikorn? That's an astounding yes. If I end selling all my boards, I want the ones remaining to spark joy.. and that Unikorn brass weight sparks big jois. biguns.

Now for those who are trying to get a board that sounds/feels good? This is a KILLER deal. This OBLITERATES all the other entry level boards in sound/feel. You will not find a gummy o ring mount board at this price.

Yes, you can use the Unikorn pcb/plate in this board. Doing the reverse is more difficult as the Unikorn's JST location on the PCB is very specific to the very specific length of the JST connector for the board.

Aesthetics leave something to be desired but a lot of people are buying the CK Bakeneko and just cerakoting it. Because it is cast aluminum, it does NOT take well to anodization. So keep that in mind.

Also wanted to note that the QC standards for this board are VERY low based off of its price point. So expect the worst and plan for cerakoting. In Orange County, cerakote for a two piece board like this should be around $120 or $130. Ask your local gun shops for their quotes.
