Gen Z Protests refer to demonstrations led by Generation Z (those born in the late 1990s to early 2010s), which began as an expression of anger from the younger generation against the privileged elite class. Many young people in Nepal have been frustrated by elite families whose children allegedly falsify academic credentials and land prestigious jobs effortlessly. These grievances were widely shared through social media platforms. In response, Nepal’s leadership, recognizing the seriousness of the situation, blocked social media access and issued a ban on its use to prevent the youth from sharing information. This crackdown led to an even stronger backlash. Young people took to the streets en masse, and the protest movement turned into a violent uprising.
What happened in Nepal is not an isolated case — similar dynamics are occurring in many parts of the world. In South Korea, the situation shows notable parallels. Recently, there have been many allegations that children of elite families have falsified academic records to gain unfair access to top jobs. As these cases circulated, some even claimed that Korea’s elites are now considering censoring KakaoTalk, the country’s most widely used messaging platform.
However, unlike Nepal, large-scale violent protests have not erupted in South Korea. A recent example is President Lee Jae-myung, who granted a presidential pardon to Cho Kuk, a former left-leaning Minister of Justice who had been imprisoned for academic fraud involving his children. In Korea, there tends to be a strong social atmosphere that teaches younger people to respect the elite class, which is why corruption and privilege among elites are often tolerated more than in places like Nepal.
